Removing Your Own Appendix

This sounds crazy doesn’t it?  But in the Antarctic in 1961, a Russian surgeon removed his own appendix.  But would antibiotics have worked as well?  During the cold war appendicitis on the US nuclear submarines was treated successfully with antibiotics.  The old military treatment was tetracycline!

There are some small studies that suggest antibiotics might be considered the first line of treatment, with surgery coming later if necessary.  Click here for the story.
