An unfortunate truth

Submitted by Sylvia P.: Abuse in nursing homes received attention in a recent CNN story titled “Sick, dying and raped in America.” We are fortunate at Skyline to have strong leadership in preventing abuse but it is of national concern in poorly monitored facilities. The information is depressing and difficult to imagine – but very real unfortunately. The article has information on when to suspect abuse and how to report it.

This investigation of elder abuse is stirring the Long Term Ombudsman Program. Organizations that champion the elderly are announcing online their shock and revulsion. Unfortunately, the nation’s care of the most vulnerable people is to be compared to the care in this nursing home. We read and witness mistreatment and neglect again and again. Then return to business as usual rather than coming up with a better way to care.

This expose’ is unusual with it’s videos of interviews with two sexual offenders. If the facility administrators were in custody, imagine their confessions of unrestrained lust for monetary gratification and power over the defenseless. Unfortunately, the professional violators act with polish and reserve, while their employees confess.

Many of us are, like the ltc trade organization warns of, seeing a new generation of “more savvy and demanding” clients of long term care. Times are changing, and the formerly defenseless are getting organized.

Personally, I have heard for some years about physical and financial abuse in poorly run nursing homes. I am very glad that you are introducing this topic on line. I worry that there is a tendency here to talk more about easy to hear topics and these more stressful, appalling issues get too little attention. So thank you, Jim. Both our Independent Living residents and Asst Living Residents need to be aware of this problem, even if it is outside Skyline. Family members should learn about this, too. An educated group of residents and their families and friends, are the best way to keep our safe environment safe!
