Our much admired resident, the late Tom Gibbs, pretty well summed up the Madison BRT project as a “solution in search of a problem”. At millions of dollars of costs and countless disruptions to every day activities, not to mention negative impacts on the surviving businesses on Madison, we will, in 3 or 4 years have a modern electric/NO HOLD THAT, now they’ll be hybrid maybe/buses plying from 1st and Madison to the MLK intersection. They’ll have to be special buses with doors on both sides since in our neighborhood there will be a single platform in the middle of the street for passengers in both directions. Left turns off Madison will be curtailed to a few intersections and traffic across Madison will be limited at many intersections. In return for this, it will be possible for a transit rider to travel from, say 23rd and Madison to 1st & Madison between 4 to 7 minutes faster. And the traffic engineering and transit wonk professionals will have a new achievement for their resumes.
