Summary The Library welcomes soprano Shih-Yi Kuan, violist Brian Lew, and pianist Jason Kuo, performing Schumann’s Fantasy Pieces, German art songs, and classic songs of Taiwanese singer Teresa Teng (鄧麗君).

Description Member of the Northwest Symphony Orchestra and of the Lake Washington Symphony Orchestra, violist Brian Lew (劉白) graduated from the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. Subsequently, he studied the viola with Bela Mori in São Paulo, Brazil, Bruno Giuranna in Detmold, Germany, and Paul Coletti at the University of Washington. While a student in Brazil, he played in music festivals and on television; soloed with the State Symphony Orchestra of São Paulo, conducted by Eleazar de Carvalho; and premiered a concerto dedicated to him and conducted by Ernst Mahle. Before coming to Seattle, he was a violist with orchestras in Brazil, Germany and Taiwan, where he also taught at the Chinese Culture University.

Shih-Yi Kuan (管士怡) majored in voice and piano at a teachers college in Taiwan. After graduation, she taught music in a public school for six years while conducting children’s choirs which won awards and toured Korea and Japan. She then studied at a conservatory in Graz, Austria: the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst. Her teachers included Lilian Sukis, Gerhard Zeller, and Roberta Knie. Shih-Yi graduated, with distinction, with a diploma in Lieder and Oratorio and another diploma in Opera Performance. At the Meistersinger Competition at the American Institute of Music in Graz, Shih-Yi was awarded the Audience Prize (first place) and received third place from the jury. Since 1996 Shih-Yi has been teaching voice and piano near Mill Creek–where she lives with her husband and dog. She is a member of the Edmonds Music Teachers Association, the Washington State Music Teachers Association and the Music Teachers National Association.

Pianist Jason S. Kuo (郭士永) studied with Martha Wasley at the University of California at Berkeley and was later coached by Janet Guggenheim, whose worldwide concert credits included over thirty years of collaboration with the celebrated violinist Itzhak Perlman. Jason performed in public masterclasses of Richard Goode and the late Karl Schnabel while residing in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been performing actively as an accompanist and a chamber musician. Jason also performs as the keyboard member of the Northwest Symphony and the Octava Chamber Orchestra. He maintains teaching studios in Seattle, Bothell, and Bellevue.
