Oregonians freak out about pumping their own gas

Actually, I think Oregon may have had it right. Can you remember pulling into a nice Texaco station, being welcomed at the pump and filling up for 26 cents a gallon, having the oil checked and windows washed? Those long gone days actually weren’t in neighboring Oregon. Oregon was only one of two states that, until January 1st, where it was against the law to pump your own gas. Actually, I wouldn’t mind staying in my car on these cold rainy days getting friendly service for my car and it might even provide a few jobs for those who need them.

Oregonians seem to be missing the pampering and coming up with all kinds of, gasp, dangers and problems in trying to fill your own tank. George Wills of the Washington Post has a funny take on this. Click here for the article.

  1. Dick Hulbert says:

Based on the reported 2016 population figures for the 36 Oregon counties, 18 will fall in the category of 40 K population each and represent a huge majority of the state’s population. It would appear that Oregon will continue to be a “no-pump state” for an overwhelming majority of the residents if I understand the new regs.

    • Jim deMaine says:

The towns under 40,000 will be self-pumping stations. According to Newsweek, “A gas station manager in Prineville, Oregon, said his station will continue to employ attendants. Another gas station owner in Metolius, Oregon, added, “My equipment is not set up for credit cards, so we don’t have any way of recording the gallons.”

While the law will require everyday citizens to pump their own gas, the Americans With Disabilities Act ensures gas stations provide assistance for the elderly and disabled.

In New Jersey, a violation of the self-pumping law will elicit a fine between $50 and $250 for first offense, and up to $500 for subsequent offenses.”

I’m beginning to see the problem of over-regulating in some areas. Stop in a rural area if you want to self-pump!
