About the Film
Informative and yet intimate, Speaking of Dying captures the importance of individuals and groups speaking openly about all aspects of the dying process. Viewing this film will inspire and encourage you to talk to your friends, family, health care agents and medical providers about your own end of life planning, choices and wishes.
Trudy James, producer, is a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and is a retired interfaith hospital chaplain. She learned hands-on lessons about death, dying and grief while creating a faith-based volunteer program in the early days of the AIDS epidemic in the South; her ground-breaking work with AIDS was honored at the Clinton White House. Later, she created an AIDS Care Team program in Seattle and served as a chaplain at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. After retiring, she spent four years pioneering community-based end-of-life planning workshops and two years producing the Speaking of Dying film that reflects the heart of those groups.
The film, which premiered at the Frye Museum on April 16, 2015, has been screened over 150 times in Seattle and in other states, in congregations, libraries, social work classes, senior housing, medical and hospice venues. Trudy has also trained ten facilitators who lead end-of-life workshops and screen the film. She is on the Advisory Board for End of Life, Washington.
