By chance I discovered the Washington Black Lives Matter Alliance website. <blmalliancewa.org>
It is very good; and clearly, the BLM movement is heavily invested in change through legislation. The are hoping to get passed a collection of bills they call ‘Reparations for Black LIves”.
I know the word ‘reparations’ is a hot button word, so let me suggest the most helpful definition I’ve seen… and it was given by an Indigenous man.”Reparations are about owning up to one another as family” Bradley Hauff, an Ogalala Lakota Sioux. And, it is interesting that the website refers to those signed on to it as ‘Fam’.
The website is superb in tracking bills… most of which are ones we would be following anyway (eg. policing, capital gains). They have great visuals that track where bills are in both the state House and Senate, and direct links to all the info you might want on any bill.
You can also sign up for Action Alerts asking for your help to move a bill in/out of committee.. to a vote.. between houses of the legislature. And if you do sign up, they provide essentially everything you will need: names and emails for all the sponsoring legislators, plus a draft email that you can edit or add to as you wish. They really make it easy to advocate for the bills they are following.
This website shows how BLM has matured and is gaining strength and becoming a force against the ingrained racism of our beloved country. The movement is no longer just protesting in the streets but is working hard for institutional change and asking us to leverage our white privilege toward that end.
