In 2012, during Bashar al- Assad’s ruthlessly bombing of both the successful and the unsuccessful, the Hassad family was forced to flee Syria. Their successful chocolate business was totally destroyed. After a few years stay in Lebanon as refugees, they were invited to come to Canada. In 2016 they opened their first chocolate shop in the small town of Antigonish in Nova Scotia. I visited the shop not long after it opened because I just happened to be on a tour of the Maritime provinces. Their shop where they made their chocolates was a square room, probably smaller than my main room here at Skyline.
Their business flourished and they now have stores from east to west in Canada. They’ve just created a new chocolate bar to show their loyalty to the country that took them in.
