I learned the word tocaya from one of the care givers at Skyline. She was the caregiver for a friend of mine who has dementia. I saw them one day and went up to my friend and asked him if he knew my name. He hesitated and then said “Perla.” The caregiver said to him, “No, I’m Perla.” That does happen to be her name. I said to her, “That’s also my name.” That’s when she taught me the word tocaya. Now whenever we see each other we say “tocaya.”
Sadly, my friend with dementia no longer recognizes me.
