Germ problem? Call Dr. Copper

Alice Mailloux passed me an article from the WSJ about the antimicrobial effects of copper. For example, “Since receiving a grant to install copper surfaces in Pullman Regional Hospital in Pullman, Wash., Ed Harrich, director of surgical services there, said the addition of copper alloys has become a priority and is setting aside funds every year to purchase more.” It may be time for Cruise Ships, Casinos, and even Long Term Care facilities to evaluate this. There are some critics who want more data showing proof of effectiveness in clinical outcomes (not just surface bug counts), because skin to skin is still likely the way many infectious organisms are transferred. Stay tuned! Click here for the full article.

Brief Skyline725 Blog Report

The Skyline725 blog has been running for about two years now. Here are a few stats.

  • 57 subscribers to the blog receive emails when a new post goes up
  • A total of 1098 posts have been uploaded to date. They are broken down by categories on the R side.
  • There have been 5154 visitors to the blog with a total of 25,072 views
  • The largest number of views was 230 in one day (compared to an average of about 35)

Folks ask me if this doesn’t take a lot of time. Not really. Maybe 30 minutes a day. That’s because a number of you send me interesting articles to post – thank you!

I’m always looking for more authors, so please contact me if interested.

You’ll note from the pages at the top that Gordon Gray keeps the Science/Tech area alive, and we try to post Opera happenings. Brief Bios will be updated as soon as it’s completed. It gets a lot of “hits” as does our wonderful Skyliner. Bill Calvin has been posting pictures of the “walls” going up around Skyline which are daunting. Still I could use more ideas for enhancing the blog. Help is always appreciated. After all this is YOUR blog!

Why the Democrats are still struggling – Hillary’s problems

Hillary, This Is Why Democrats Are Still Struggling

Talking politics in families is always dangerous. In speaking with my brother, a Vietnam veteran and entrepreneur in North Carolina, I teased him about the toilet politics in his state. We joshed back and forth, neither of us having much (if anything) good to say about Donald Trump. Then he offered up, “No matter what, I’m not voting for Hillary.” It brought home to me, the unusual nature of this election. How many people will hold their nose and decide to vote – or just stay home!? David Brooks in the New York times points out the struggle that the Democrats and Hillary have. DONALD TRUMP’S GHOSTWRITER TELLS ALL

Tony Schwartz (from left), Ivana Trump, photographer Francesco Scavullo and Donald Trump celebrate the publication of Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal, which was ghostwritten by Schwartz.

Tony Schwartz (from left), Ivana Trump, photographer Francesco Scavullo and Donald Trump celebrate the publication of Donald Trump’s 1987 book, The Art of the Deal, which was ghostwritten by Schwartz.

Jane Mayer writes about Donald Trump’s ghostwriter, Tony Schwartz,  in the current issue of the New Yorker, “Trump, facing a crowd that had gathered in the lobby of Trump Tower, on Fifth Avenue, laid out his qualifications, saying, “We need a leader that wrote ‘The Art of the Deal.’ ” If that was so, Schwartz thought, then he, not Trump, should be running. Schwartz dashed off a tweet: “Many thanks Donald Trump for suggesting I run for President, based on the fact that I wrote ‘The Art of the Deal.’ ”

Schwartz, in an interview I heard on NPR stated, “One of the chief things I’m concerned about is the limits of his attention span, which are as severe as any person I think I’ve ever met,” Schwartz says. “No matter what question I asked, he would become impatient with it pretty quickly, and literally, from the very first time I sat down to start interviewing him, after about 10 or 15 minutes, he said, ‘You know, I don’t really wanna talk about this stuff, I’m not interested in it, I mean it’s over, it’s the past, I’m done with it, what else have you got?’ ”

The idea of a president in an “incredibly complex and threatening world who can’t pay attention is itself frightening,” Schwartz says.

Skyline Resident’s Association meeting about possible expansion

From Sue Phillips

“Resident Reaction to Skyline II

Process:  Over 100 Skyline residents attending the July 14, 2016, quarterly meeting were divided into 5 groups and asked to respond to the question “What is your reaction to the proposal for Skyline II?”   Discussion leaders were residents who had participated in master planning sessions.  They were Jim McClaine, Sue Phillips, Diane Stevens, Bob Terrell and Barb Williams.  Group results were shared with those present.  The following points summarize the reactions most frequently voiced by Skyline residents:

  • Adequacy of the Terraces to meet the needs of the expanded population Residents understand that the current Terraces population includes a significant number of non-residents but would like to see actuarial studies which reflect the needs of the expanded population.
  • Preservation of the Skyline Community

The sense of community in Skyline is one of its biggest assets.  Many residents expressed concern that even with shared amenities, the new building would result in two separate populations, both physically and demographically.

  • Financial issues

Residents are concerned about the impact of Skyline II on our current financial position.  They are also concerned about increased liability for the current residents.

  • Amenities

Many residents expressed a desire for specific amenities and would like to be consulted before allotted space has been decided upon. There is a general feeling that some of the current facilities in Skyline I would be inadequate for the enlarged population.

  • Access to Skyline II

Residents strongly prefer covered access between the buildings.

Some residents expressed a desire to have access to vacated PRCN space and others are concerned about the impact of diminished views on resales in this building.”

Comments on Donald Trump

David Brooks, a moderate Republican writer, has this op-ed piece in the NYT today. In it he says, “It’s hard to know exactly what is going on in that brain, but science lends a clue. Psychologists wonder if narcissists are defined by extremely high self-esteem or by extremely low self-esteem that they are trying to mask. The current consensus seems to be that they are marked by unstable self-esteem. Their self-confidence can be both high and fragile, so they perceive ego threat all around.”

My own concern is that we have a true classical sociopath on the loose who also appears to have adult attention deficit disorder. His short attention span reverts to “I-positive” and “you-negative” messages. He appears incapable of in depth analytical thought and rational argument. If elected there will be many times he doesn’t get his way. What will he do then? Quit? Fire staff? Rant? I’m concerned that he will order military action that the Armed Forces will find so undo-able and damaging that we could have a constitutional crisis. Let’s hope and pray none of this comes to pass – but it could if unstopped.

Advisory to vote “No” on NaCCRA’s proposed Bylaws

WACCRA-Eblast-Header

SECOND ADVISORY : Vote ”No”on NaCCRA’s proposed Bylaws.*

The end of May the state organization Washington Continuing Care Residents Association(WACCRA) sent you an advisory to vote AGAINST the change in the proposed changes to NaCCRA Bylaws. NaCCRA adopted these changes without prior review by members, violating the existing Bylaws. The deadline for your vote is August 31, 2016. Click on link below to get a ballot if you haven’t voted yet.

After careful review of the amendments, your Washington state Executive Committee voted unanimously on Friday, May 20, 2016, to recommend that you vote “NO” on the new bylaws for the following reasons:

1. We are confused about the meaning of the new mission statement. The proposed mission reads “NaCCRA seeks to advance the quality of life for older Americans and to promote and improve congregate living and continuing care.” The word “residents” does not appear in the new mission statement.
2. The Executive Committee believes that too much authority would be transferred to the Board:

a. Of primary concern is the removal of Robert’s Rules of Order as the Parliamentary Authority. Instead, the Board would create operational rules.
b. Members would lose the right to elect directors; only the Board would elect its members as well as its officers.
c. The Bylaws would remove the requirement for 9 to 11 Directors. The Board could change the number of Directors at will.
d. The Board would gain the authority to suspend the term limits for director or any officer.
e. A Director could be retired by the President because of “the realities of aging.” with the agreement with any director or any officer.
f. Most of the accountability language for Board members has been removed.

Overall the impact of the proposed revisions removes control from members and places decisions solely in the hands of the Board. We think such changes will not encourage the growth of individual memberships across the country who are affiliated through their state chapters.

In case you misplaced the ballot, you can easily access it by clicking on this link:NaCCRA Bylaws Ballot.

Sincerely,
WACCRA Executive Committee
Jim McClaine, President
Inez Allan, Vice President
Sam Beard, Secretary
Stephanie Chamberlain, Treasurer
Don Bennett, Member-at-Large
Hellmut Golde, Immediate Past President
